DIY Water Quality Testing
Visual Inspection
Fill a clear glass with water and check for:
- Cloudiness or turbidity
- Floating particles
- Discoloration
Smell Test
Pure water should be odorless. Common odors indicate:

- Rotten egg: Hydrogen sulfide or bacteria
- Musty: Organic matter or algae
Taste Test
Pure water has a neutral taste. Detect:
- Metallic: Presence of iron, copper, or zinc
- Salty: High dissolved solids
- Bitter: Excess minerals or contamination
TDS Meter Test
Affordable TDS meters measure dissolved solids:
- 50-150 ppm: Excellent
- 150-300 ppm: Good
- 300-500 ppm: Fair
- >500 ppm: Poor (needs RO treatment)
pH Test
Use pH strips or meter. Ideal range: 6.5-8.5
